Ian graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2000 with the Dip.RAM, their highest performance accolade. He has a busy freelance career which has included performances with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, London Sinfonietta, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Concert Orchestra, English National Opero and English Touring Opera. He performs in ‘The Czardas Duo’ with cellist Matthew Forbes and together they have performed at festivals in the UK and Europe giving many premieres of new works written for them.
Ian has been part of Icebreaker since 2001. In summer 2004 he toured with the Divine Comedy, including appearances at Glastonbury and the Montreux Jazz Festival. He teaches at Kingston and Surrey Universities as well as Morley College and in July 2004 was accordion and chamber music tutor at Dartington International Summer School. He has also adjudicated at festivals in the UK and Ireland. In May 2003 Ian became one of the youngest ever musicians to be honoured as an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, an honour awarded to past students who have achieved distinction in the profession.
