Rowland Sutherland


Rowland is regarded as one of the finest and most versatile flautists in Britain, performing regularly in new music, jazz, symphony  orchestras, non-Western groups, pop outfits and as a soloist, an in addition is active as a bandleader, composer, arranger and teacher.

Rowland has played and recorded with some of the finest new music ensembles  and dance companies in Britain, including New Music Players, Ixion,  Lontano, London Musici, Uroboros, Music Projects/London, Phoenix Dance, Jazz Xchange Music and Dance, and Rambert Dance Company.

The New Music Players 2003 CD Crying Bird, Echoing Star (London Independent Records) features Rowland’s composition Timeless Odyssey.  Other compositions include the colourful samba-inspired work Espiritu Libre for Lontano, premiered in April 2005 and One for Hermeto for the Fidelio Trio, which was enthusiastically received at its premiere in September 2005.

Rowland Sutherland fronts his own band, the critically acclaimed Mistura,  who perform Brazilian jazz fusion alongside Afro-Cuban and pan African grooves.  Their album Mistura – ‘Coast to Coast’ is out on the FMR label.  He is a professor at both the Trinity College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has been a member of Icebreaker since 1999.
