After gaining an honours degree in Music from the University of Surrey, where he studied piano with Martin Hughes, Walter’s career as a pianist and composer has taken him into a diverse range of musical worlds. Orchestras and ensembles he’s worked with include the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Lontano, The London Sinfonietta, The Michael Nyman Band and of course Icebreaker.
Since 1988 he’s been accompanying silent films around Europe with Harmonie Band, with whom he toured in Poland recently in collaboration with the Hilliard Ensemble. Walter has regular engagements as a keyboardist/musical director at London’s National Theatre, and often records for film and television.
As a composer he has created scores and performed in a wide range of media and performing arts including site-specific choreography with ‘Sirens Crossing’. He is connected with developments in electro-instrumental music through his self-made “Chromasone” instrument and his association with STEIM in Amsterdam. He currently teaches privately as director of Bankside Keys on London’s South Bank.
