Flautist Rowland Sutherland enjoys an international career in many different fields of music. He regularly performs and guests in new music ensembles, jazz groups, symphony orchestras, non-Western groups, pop outfits and as a soloist.
Ensembles and orchestras he has performed with include New Music Players, Lontano, Icebreaker, Colin Currie Group, Uroboros, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Ixion and the Philharmonia, Bournemouth Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, BBC Concert, European Community Chamber orchestras, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and City of London Sinfonia. He made his BBC Proms debut as a soloist during the 2006 season performing music by Steve Reich and his solo contemporary performances have often been broadcast by BBC radio. Jazz and World Music artists Rowland has performed with include such international artists as Frank Wess, David Murray, Flora Purim, Henry Threadgil, Carla Bley, Ali Ryerson, Manu Dibango, Airto Moreira, Evan Parker, Nitin Sawhney, Paulo Fresu, Courtney Pine, Jean Toussaint, Orphy Robinson, Issie Barratt, Mark Lockheart, Zoe Rahman, Alec Dankworth, King Sunny Adé, Olodum (Brazil) and Rebirth Brass Band (New Orleans). Rowland’s composition Enlightenment (inspired by A Love Supreme by John Coltrane) featured at London's Meltdown Festival in 2014 to much acclaim. Rowland’s band Mistura performs Brazilian influenced jazz, and with Jackie Walduck, he leads Ethereal World, which is both a music club night and an ensemble featuring soloists in cross-cultural jazz, free improvisation, experimental and contemporary classical music. Rowland Sutherland’s London Art Collective focuses on spatial, cosmic and spiritual jazz and he performs Caribbean and Brazilian influenced contemporary jazz in his Rowland Sutherland Sextet. Rowland has recorded for a diverse range of pop artists such as Incognito, George Benson, Joss Stone, Us3, Fightstar, Keziah Jones, Guillemots, Omar, William Orbit, Marc Almond and MC Solaar. Rowland has taught, lectured or held workshops at many institutions including Guildhall, the Birmingham Conservatoire, the RNCM and Trinity Laban, as well MIT, the University of the Bahamas and the Cairo Conservatoire.
